Beyond our shores: Schools of Sanctuary Mini-Conference

Beyond our shores: Schools of Sanctuary Mini-Conference Tuesday 21st June 2022, 10am-2.15pm, University of Winchester.

As part of Refugee Week (20th-26th June 2022), the University of Winchester is excited to invite local primary and secondary schools to join us to explore how we can be places of sanctuary in our classrooms and communities.

Who is this event for?

The mini-conference is open to both current Schools of Sanctuary and schools interested in learning more about how they can create a culture of welcome and inclusion for refugees and people seeking asylum.

Each school is invited to identify a group of ‘Sanctuary Ambassadors’, adults and children/young people, who will develop their knowledge and understanding of the impact of forced migration and develop ideas of how they can champion the principles of the Schools of Sanctuary movement, ‘learn, embed and share’, back in their school communities.

Each school that expresses an interest in attending will be invited to bring up to 8 students/pupils to take part in the workshops throughout the day, alongside any staff/governors/parents/carers who wish to lead on this activity in the school.

What will the day involve?

School ‘Sanctuary Ambassadors’ will have the opportunity to:

• Increase knowledge and understanding of sanctuary/forced migration

• Hear from sanctuary students currently studying at the University of Winchester

• Build a growing community of collaboration with other sanctuary ambassadors

• Take part in workshops to explore the impact of forced migration

NB. The event is free and will include light refreshments and lunch, but schools will need to organise their own transport. Parking is available on-campus.
